The most intriguing junior college basketball story of the 2004-2005 season comes right out of Liberal, Kansas and Dave Brown is the reason the story is a successful one. The ninth year head coach of the Seward County Saints orchestrated one of the most amazing seasons this year and hopefully the Saints still have plenty of games left in them for the post season. It was announced Thursday that Dave Brown has been named the Jayhawk West Coach of the Year.

Dave Brown won his third Jayhawk Conference Coach of the Year Award

A year ago, Brown's Saints finished 9-21 overall and 1-16 in the Jayhawk West conference, finishing in ninth place in the Western division. After losing two players last year to NCAA division I schools before the deadline to drop classes, Brown found himself looking everywhere for some help to his diminished squad. This year, the Saints have seven players returning from last year's ninth place team and added four newcomers to the lineup in hopes of a turnaround season. The Saints did exactly that, finishing two games behind Garden City for first place, finishing in second place in the West with an 11-5 conference record.
Brown has proven his consistency as a head coach in his tenure at Seward County, winning 20 games or better in seven of his nine years at the helm of the Saints.
Also in 2004-2005, the Saints faced the tragedy of losing teammate Robert Townsend to a fatal car crash on November 25. Since Townsend's passing, the Saints are 18-5 and Brown is a big part of the reason why the Saints didn't collapse after the devastating tragedy.

On January 19, Brown hit a coaching milestone winning game No. 200 as Saints head coach. With an overall coaching record of 208-87, Brown has the highest winning percentage of any Saints head coach in school history (.705 %). Brown is no stranger to the Jayhawk West Coach of the Year award, as he was awarded Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2002.
In 1998, Brown's Saints won a school record 35 games and finished 3rd in the NJCAA National Tournament. Also in 1998, Brown was named Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Junior College Coach of the Year and was a finalist for National Junior College Coach of the Year. In 2002, the Saints won the Jayhawk West and finished 28-6 overall.
Since taking the head coaching position in 1996, Brown has coached four NJCAA All-Americans, five Jayhawk West Conference MVP's, and three Jayhawk West Freshman of the Year. Brown has also coached or recruited nine of the top ten all-time leading scorers in Seward County history.
