KEONI WATSON NAMED ALL-REGION AND ALL CONFERENCE

It was announced Thursday, that sophomores Keoni Watson and Kyle Smith have received Jayhawk Conference accolades. Watson was named to the NJCAA Region VI Men's Basketball Division I All-Region First Team and to the Jayhawk West First Team All-Conference team. Smith received Honorable Mention Jayhawk West All-Conference. Watson received the fifth most votes in the All-Region voting.
These two players were a part of the 9-21 Saints team last year that finished in the basement of the Jayhawk West Conference. In a turnaround season, the Saints pulled off the surprise of the year, with a 23-8 overall record and 11-5 Western division record, finishing second place in the conference. Watson and Smith are key contributors to why the Saints season has been such a success.

Watson, a 5'10" shooting guard from San Diego, California, had big numbers as a freshman but didn't see improvements in the category that means most in a team sport, wins. This season, Watson has averaged 18.4 points per game, 4.2 assists per game, 2.8 rebounds per game, 2.1 steals per game as the Saints upped their conference win total from 1 in 2003-2004 to 11 this season. Watson ranks 4th in the Jayhawk Conference and 23rd in the NJCAA in scoring. His assist total is good for 8th in Conference in assists and 7th in Conference in steals. Additionally, Watson was named NJCAA National Player of the Week for men's basketball on February 22.

Kyle Smith ranked 6th in the Jayhawk Conference in 3-Point % (.398)

Smith, a 5'7"point guard from Wichita, Kansas, was the floor leader for the Saints all season long. In 16 conference games, Smith shot lights out from three-point land hitting 37-of-93 (.398 %). Smith made three or more trey's nine times against Jayhawk West opponents. Smith averaged 8.5 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2 assists per game this season. Smith finished conference play ranked 6th in the Jayhawk Conference in 3-point percentage.
Watson and Smith will lead the Saints into the Region VI tournament in Salina, starting Sunday at 5:00 p.m. against Neosho County, for a quarter finals match-up.
