SCCC SAINTS SWEEP PEPSI CLASSIC
The Seward County Saints basketball team started off the 2004-05 season with a bang this past weekend hosting the Pepsi Classic. The Saints (3-0, 0-0) defeated Fort Scott Community College Friday evening 70-57 and won their final game of the Classic against Rose State College 79-72 on Saturday. The Saints finished the tournament with a 3-0 record.

The Saints saw impressive offensive performances from many players in their win against Rose State Saturday night. The high flying Davone Allen had a double/double for the Saints, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Allen was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, had two blocks and two steals. Red-shirt freshman Adam Tanner led the team with six field goals and 15 points. The Victoria, Australia, native pulled down seven rebounds and had one blocked shot in 23 minutes of play.

Robert Townsend had a strong outing Saturday night as he scored 11 points, had six rebounds, two assists and two steals. The 6’0” Townsend averaged 9 points, four rebounds and three steals in the Pepsi Classic.

Freshman Raynard Sawyer hit many big shots for the Saints on the weekend and led the Saints in scoring. The 6’3” Cleveland, Ohio native averaged 13.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists on the weekend. The Saints also saw offensive production from sophomore swingman Brian McCarther. McCarther, a 6’6” sophomore, who averaged 8.7 points/game last season, averaged 13 points per contest over the weekend. In addition, McCarther also averaged 6.7 rebounds on the weekend.

The Saints shot .542 (91-168) from the field, .302 (13-43) from three-point range and .592 (58-98) from the free-throw line on the weekend. The Saints also out rebounded their opponents 131 to 103 in the three games.

SCCC will travel this weekend, Nov.12-13, to Dodge City, Kansas, to play in the Dodge City Invitational Tournament. Seward County will play Friday against Sterling College J.V. at 6:00 p.m., and again Saturday at 6:00 p.m. against Tabor College J.V.

The Saints will return to the Green House the following weekend as the Saints and Lady Saints will host the Wendy’s Classic. The Saints will play Friday, November 19 against Brown Mackie, and Saturday November 20 against Frank Phillips College. Both nights the Saints will play at 8:00 p.m.
