SAINTS LOSE TWICE IN WENDY’S CLASSIC
The Saints basketball team held their own this past weekend, as they hosted the Wendy’s Classic at the Green House, but they couldn’t escape with a victory. The Saints (5-2, 0-0 in the Jayhawk West) lost a heartbreaker against Clarendon College on Saturday night 109-107 and were defeated Friday 85-73 against NJCAA D-II powerhouse Brown Mackie.
The Saints were sparked Friday night by sophomore guard Keoni Watson. The 5’10” San Diego, California, native ran wild scoring 24 points, dishing out five assists and chipping in two steals. Watson was 10-for-19 from the field and kept Brown Mackie defenders guessing all night what direction he would go in next. Freshman Raynard Sawyer and sophomore guard Robert Townsend joined Watson in double figures in scoring with 13 and 12 respectively.
On Saturday night the Saints were in a back and forth battle with Clarendon College. There never was a large lead by either team but the Saints had big men Brian McCarther and Adam Tanner in foul trouble during most of the second half. The Saints also committed 26 turnovers to Clarendon’s 15.
Six Saints were in double figures in scoring Saturday, including, Watson (21), Tanner (19), Kyle Smith (13), Sawyer (12), McCarther (12) and Davone Allen (10).
The Saints have continued to shine in shooting from the field as they now are shooting .538 (241-for-448) but have also continued to struggle from the free-throw line shooting .581 (118-for-203). For the season Watson is averaging 14.7 points per game, Tanner is leading all rebounders with his 6.1 rebounds per game (rpg.) and Sawyer has stayed hot behind the three-point line making 16 three’s this season.
The Saints will head to Odessa, Texas, this weekend to play a round-robin-tournament. The Saints will face Lee College Thursday at 6:00 p.m. With a win or a loss the Saints will match up with either Odessa College or Murray State College.
