The SCCC Saints saw a 12 point lead against Colby Community College start diminishing late in the second half of Saturday nights match-up. But thanks to a clutch shot from sophomore Brian McCarther the Saints defeated the Trojans 64-62 keeping the Saints in second place in the Jayhawk West Conference.
The Saints controlled the ball game for most of the 40 minutes this past Saturday night, until the game got tight with less than a minute left in regulation. With 30 seconds to play and the Trojans down by three they drove the length of the court looking for their three-point specialist Lionel Womack. With 22.6 seconds remaining Womack nailed a three-point bucket from the corner of the court just in front of Colby’s bench.
With the game tied 62-62 the Saints knew they could settle for the last shot. Guard Keoni Watson handled the ball looking to create a shot. With less than: 10 seconds remaining, Watson passed the ball to McCarther near the three-point line. McCarther took one head fake and got around his defender to head for his last second shot. With 1.9 seconds remaining McCarther drove in for a eight foot jumper than went through the net to give the Saints the two point victory.
The Saints saw another total team effort from all 12 players as each player got in the game and eight Saints scored. Sophomore Kyle Smith and Freshman Adam Tanner led the way scoring 12 points each. Watson scored 11 points and freshman post Preston Sims continued his successful Jayhawk West play scoring 10 points. Tanner occupied the paint grabbing seven rebounds and McCarther had four rebounds as the Saints out rebounded the Trojans 35-27. On the season the Saints are averaging 4.5 more rebounds a game than their opponents.
