SAINTS WIN TWO AT JAYHAWK SHOOTOUT
Playing against one familiar opponent and another Jayhawk East team didn’t faze the Saints as they picked up two wins on the weekend at the Jayhawk Shootout in Coffeyville, Kansas. The Saints (9-3, 0-0 in the Jayhawk West) defeated Fort Scott Community College 58-47 on Saturday. SCCC has now defeated the Greyhounds twice this season, their other win coming in the Pepsi Classic. The Saints dominated Johnson County on Sunday by the score of 71-46.

In the Saints 11 point victory over Fort Scott on Saturday three players scored in double digits. The Saints were led by red-shirt freshman Adam Tanner. Tanner scored 13 points (5-for-7 from the field), sophomore guard Keoni Watson collected five rebounds and scored 11 points from the Saints backcourt, and sophomore Brian McCarther added 10 points for the Saints.

McCarther is averaging a solid 10.1 points per game and five rebounds a contest for the Saints this season. The Saints out rebounded Fort Scott 47-34 and allowed Fort Scott only 13 first half points.

In Sunday’s blowout win over Johnson County, the Saints saw Watson score a team high 18 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field, 2-for-4 from three-point land and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Watson is leading the Saints in scoring, averaging 16.8 ppg. this season. He also had three assists and two steals against Johnson County.

The Saints defense provided strength all game as they didn’t allow any Johnson player to score in double figures. The Saints had a total of 11 steals, three blocked shots and grabbed 37 rebounds (11 offensive and 26 defensive).

Sophomore guard Kyle Smith had an impressive day shooting the ball. Smith was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point land, and he also had three rebounds and scored nine points in the game.

With their ninth win on the season the Saints have already equaled the total amount of wins from last season’s team. The Saints will look to keep their four game winning streak alive this weekend as they host the Pizza Hut Classic. The Saints will play Newman University J.V. Friday night and Frank Phillips College Saturday night. Both games will be at 8:00 p.m. at the Green House.
