Seward County (16-5, 5-2 in the Jayhawk West) knocked off a hot Hutchinson team who entered Wednesday’s contest with wins over Colby and Barton County last week after starting the Jayhawk West schedule 0-3.
Not only did Hutchinson (12-6, 2-4 in the Jayhawk West) have momentum heading into the Green House, they also had Michael Williams who was named the NJCAA National Player of the Week on Tuesday. The Saints brought Williams back down to earth as he was 4-for-11 from the field and made only one three-point field goal. Williams finished the night with nine points in 25 minutes of play.
Watson, a 5’10” shooting guard from San Diego, California, scored early and often against Hutch Wednesday night. Watson scored 29 points (11-for-18), was 3-for-7 from three-point range, dished out nine assists and finished the game with two steals. In Watson’s career at Seward County, he ranks in two major statistical Top Ten categories. Watson is currently seventh in Seward County history for three-pointer in a career (91). Soon he will leap past former Saints Standout Thaydeus Holden for sixth place with three more trey’s. Watson is also among the best all-time players at Seward County for points scored in a career. Watson currently has 949 career points at SCCC, and is only 16 points behind former Saints All-American and current Texas Tech Red Raider Devonne Giles for ninth place all-time in scoring.
Sophomore Kyle Smith kept his torrid Jayhawk West Conference shooting going with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including a 5-for-9 three point shooting effort. The Saints got big time production from 6’8” sophomore Steve Vanarsdale, who came in late during the first half and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the paint, giving the Saints a quick six points and one rebound in only three minutes of play in the first half. Vanarsdale is leading the team in field goal percentage shooting .750 % (21-for-28) on the season.
The Saints will play next Wednesday, February 2, at Barton County. The Saints are alone in third place a game behind Garden City (5-1 in the Jayhawk West). Barton County is 8-12 overall and 3-3 in the Jayhawk West.
