COUNTY MAKES SECOND HALF COMEBACK TO DEFEAT DODGE CITY

The No. 3 Seward County Community College men’s basketball team had their backs against the wall last night, but put together a strong second-half effort to defeat Dodge City Community College 77-71, in both teams Jayhawk West Conference opener. The Saints (15-0, 1-0) trailed the Conquistador’s by as much as 15 points, with less than eight minutes remaining in the game.

Seward County trailed by 10 points at half-time (21-31), and didn’t start their comeback until midway through the second-half when Saints sharp shooter, Michael Tyree, found his range from three-point land and scored 20 of the Saints 56 second-half points.

Tyree scored all of his 20 points in the second-half on 4-of-8 shooting from three-point range and 4-for-4 shooting from the free-throw line. Tyree also had two steals for the Saints coming in off the bench in his 24 minutes of action last night.

Saints point guard, Jerrell Green, was suffering flu like symptoms prior to tip-off and was a last second decision for Saints Head Coach, Dave Brown . Green not only played, he also scored 20 points (4-for-11 field goal) and paced the Saints down the stretch shooting 12-for-13 from the free-throw line. Green dished out six assists and also recorded two steals in 29 minutes of play.

Saints big-man, Adam Tanner, was limited to just five first-half points but finished the game with 14 points (5-for-6 free throws) and nine rebounds. SCCC power forward, Keith Spencer, led the Saints on the glass with 11 rebounds and chipped in eight points.

Seward County shot well as a team from the free-throw line connecting on 28-of-37 (76 %) from the charity stripe.

Dodge City was led by several players who had strong performances including Charlie Coley (13 points and 11 rebounds), Wade Knapp (12 points and 10 rebounds), DeMarcus Lyday (19 points) and Jake Sims (14 points).

The No. 3 Saints remain undefeated after a scare from DCCC and will play this Saturday, Jan. 7, at Butler Community College . The Saints and Grizzlies are scheduled to tip-off at 8:00 p.m. in El Dorado , Kan. The Grizzlies entered Jayhawk West competition also on Wednesday with an overall record of 11-3.
