SAINTS DEFEAT COLBY AT HOME ON HOMECOMING NIGHT
It was Homecoming Night at the Green House on Saturday night, and it was the Seward County Community College men’s basketball team that picked up a crucial Jayhawk West Conference win against the Colby Community College Trojans, 90-74 at the Green House. Seward County used a 23-1 run early in the first-half to put the two teams in a tie for seventh place in the Jayhawk West Conference. The Saints improve to 18-7 overall (4-7 conference) and the Trojans fall to 11-13 overall (4-7 conference.)

The Trojans scored the first four points of the game, but it was the Saints who found the chemistry to put together a 23-1 run at the 10:00 mark of the first period.

It was an offensive battle as both teams shot better than 50 % from the field (Saints-56 %, Trojans-50 %). The Saints were able to out-rebound (offensive boards) Colby 14-6, giving the Saints multiple second chance opportunities on the offensive end of the court.

Saints point guard, Jerrell Green, came off the bench Saturday night for the Saints but ended up leading Seward in scoring a career-high 21 points. Green shot 8-for-8 from the field and made 5-of-7 free-throws while chipping in a team-best five assists.

SCCC sophomore, Adam Tanner had his usual consistent night scoring 16 points and picking up four rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Seward County used a balanced attack Saturday using seven players in at least 20 minutes of action each.

Colby used 22 points from 7 foot-1 inch freshman, Jorge Canedo who was impressive shooting 6-for-13 from the field, 1-for-1 from three-point range and a game-high 9-for-10 from the free-throw line. Canedo also had team-high’s with six rebounds and five assists.

Region VI leading scorer, Nate Bowie, was held to just four points in the first-half but finished the contest with 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor.

Seward County will travel to Pratt on Wednesday, Feb. 15, taking on third-place Pratt Community College (17-8, 6-5) who is the defending Region VI Tournament champions. Pratt defeated the Saints 91-81, in Liberal earlier this season. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at the Beaver Dome.
