SAINTS BASKETBALL PREVIEW: DAY 1

DAVE BROWN

The Seward County Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams are entering the 2005-2006 season with different styles but with similar expectations. The Saints, led by tenth year head coach, Dave Brown (208-87), are looking to mold a talented group of newcomers mixed with three returning players into a team that will contend for a Region VI Championship. In 2004-2005, the Saints finished with a 11-5 Jayhawk Conference record and a conference runner-up finish. Meanwhile, the Lady Saints are entering a new era with first year head coach, Toby Wynn, and first year assistant coach, Kim Ortega, while aiming at the same heights where the Lady Saints finished just a year ago, the NJCAA National Tournament.
Dave Brown enters this season just 16 wins shy of tying the all-time Saints Basketball head coaching wins record set by Dale Reed (1983-1996) at 224. Brown owns the schools highest all-time winning percentage (.705%) and has also led the Saints to a school record 90 Jayhawk West Conference wins in just nine seasons.
Brown will have another challenge this season as he returns just three players from last season, including only one starter. Just last season Brown proved he was capable of just about anything when he turned around a program that won just nine games in 03-04, with eight of the same players from the previous season. This season Brown and second year assistant coach, Hank Harris, have brought in possibly the finest class of newcomers Brown has seen in his tenure. The Saints welcome in ten freshmen and one transfer to join the three players returning from last year. In the Jayhawk West pre-season coaches conference, the Saints have been predicted to finish in second place of a once again formidable nine team conference.
Seward
County
was ranked No. 25 in the pre-season NJCAA Top 30 poll.
Toby Wynn was named Lady Saints head coach on
April 7, 2005
. Since becoming head coach, Wynn has signed and brought in eight new players and an assistant coach. Former SCCC two-time NJCAA All-American, Kim Ortega, will join Wynn on the sidelines in her first season as the assistant coach for her alma mater. Wynn has inherited a Lady Saints basketball program that has won over 400 games in the past 13 seasons and has made four appearances in the NJCAA National Tournament in the past seven years.
Wynn spent last season as an assistant coach for the Lady Saints that finished fifth at the NJCAA National Tournament with an overall record of 35-3. In preparation for this season Wynn has already brought in five freshmen who received All-State honors while in high school and one transfer from a NCAA Division I program who was a Gatorade All-State Player of the Year in high school.
In the Jayhawk West pre-season coaches conference, the Lady Saints have been predicted to finish in fourth place of the nine team conference.
