NO. 15 SEWARD COUNTY IMPROVES TO 10-0 WITH THREE WINS
The Seward County Community College men’s basketball team capped off a solid week with three victories and jumping ten spots in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) men’s basketball top 20 poll. The Saints (10-0, 0-0) defeated Newman University J.V. 111-70, last Wednesday and then went to the Dodge City Classic and defeated Lamar C.C. 65-62 and Sterling J.V. 97-63. The Saints received their NJCAA No. 15 ranking on Tuesday, which gives Saints Head Coach, Dave Brown, and his program their highest ranking since the Saints were ranked No. 7 in the nation on February 11, 2003.

Seward County jumped all over Newman J.V. in the first-half scoring 58 points on 23-for-39 shooting from the floor ( 59 %) and drilling 7-of-9 from three-point land. The Saints were led by power forward, Keith Spencer, who collected a double-double with 18 points (8-for-9 shooting) and 11 rebounds. Spencer was joined in double-figures scoring with Jerrell Green (15 points), Michael Tyree (11 points) and Theron Wilson (11 points). Green also collected a double-double with a career-high 10 assists against Newman Univ.

The Saints took the court Friday night against a familiar opponent facing Lamar C.C. who Seward defeated, 75-57 in the Pepsi Classic (Liberal, KS) earlier this season. The Saints did knock off the Runnin’ Lopes, but in a battle. The Saints and the Lopes were knotted up 33-33 at half time but the Saints were able to force Lamar to commit 24 turnovers in the game while the Saints collected 17 steals, which helped lead SCCC to a narrow three point victory. Spencer put up his second double-double of the week with 11 points and 10 boards. Green was trouble for Lamar all night, collecting 10 points, seven steals and six assists.

Seward County finished the weekend with a dominant performance against Sterling J.V. who the Saints had also defeated in the Pepsi Classic earlier this season. The Saints showed their defense was for real limiting Sterling to a 22-for-77 (31 %) shooting night from the floor. The Saints also held Sterling to five three-point field goals (5-for-29) and only four players from Sterling scored more than three points in the game. Spencer delivered his third-consecutive double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds in the Saints victory. Wilson led all Saints in scoring with 16 points and Brandon Cornwell chipped in 14 points in the 97-63 route.

The No. 15 ranked Saints will use this week to prepare for the Jayhawk Shootout ( Coffeyville , KS ) this weekend. The Saints will face two Jayhawk East teams in the two-day shootout going against Allen County C.C. (6-2) on Friday at 9:00 a.m. and Saturday playing Fort Scott C.C. (4-3) at 1:00 p.m. Both games will be broadcasted by KSCB Sports Announcer, Brock Kappelmann, by listening to KSCB 1270 AM, or by going to www.kscb.net and clicking on KSCB LIVE.
