This weekend the No. 6 Seward County Community College men’s basketball team will host the Pizza Hut Classic, in the Green House. The Saints (12-0) are welcoming Newman University J.V.,
Frank
Phillips
College
and
Dodge City
Community College
to this year’s Pizza Hut Classic. The Saints will take on Newman University J.V. (2-5) on Friday night at 8:00 p.m. and then Frank Phillips (7-3) on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.
This season, the Saints have captured 12-straight victories and have been ranked in four consecutive NJCAA polls, including stops at No. 25 (pre-season), No. 15 (11/22), No. 9 (11/29) and their current spot in the poll at No. 6. Saints Head Coach,
Dave Brown
, is also closing in on a coaching milestone as he is just four wins shy of tying the school’s all-time wins mark of 224, held by former Saints head coach, Dale Reed (1983-1996).
This season the Saints have won all five games at home and after the Pizza Hut Classic will enjoy a 24-day break before beginning Jayhawk West competition on Jan. 4. After the Jayhawk Shootout last weekend, SCCC and Independence (11-0, Jayhawk East) are the only two men’s programs left in the Region VI that made it through the non-conference without a loss.
The Saints welcome Newman University J.V. on Friday night, in a re-match game after the Saints defeated Newman, 111-70, in
Wichita
on Nov. 23. In their first meeting, the Saints were led by Keith Spencer (18 points and 11 rebounds) and Jerrell Green (15 points) in their 41 point victory. Newman was led in scoring by Chad Blasdel (16 points) and Cyle Barnwell (14 points). The Saints out rebounded Newman 42-24 and forced Newman to commit 34 turnovers.
This season Newman has victories over Bethany J.V. and S.W. Baptist J.V. while collecting five losses to junior college programs (No. 5 Redlands, No. 6 SCCC,
Coffeyville
,
Neosho
County
and Butler C.C.)
On Saturday night, the Saints will be tested against Frank Phillips, who enters the Pizza Hut Classic with a 7-3 overall record and with big wins against Western Oklahoma,
Rose
State
, Kilgore J.C. and Cedar Valley J.C.
Frank Phillips is led in scoring this season by, Dremain Townsend, a 6’4” guard from
Flint
,
Michigan
. Townsend is averaging a stunning 19.9 ppg. (18th in NJCAA), 8.8 rpg., 4.2 apg., and shoots 55 % from the field. The Plainsmen are also led by sophomore shooting guard, Jerome Odem (11.3 ppg., 5.2 apg., 2.3 spg., and 2.3 rpg.), and their 6’7” sophomore forward, Chris Hinz (10.9 ppg., 7.2 rpg., 66 % field goal, 81 % free throw shooter).
Dave Brown
enters this weekend with a career 65-9, non-conference record at the Green House. In addition, Brown has a remarkable 130-23 total non-conference record in his 11 seasons as Saints head coach.
