SAINTS DROP CONFERENCE OPENER BY 10 AT DODGE CITY
The Seward County Community College men’s basketball team opened their Jayhawk West Conference season with a 74-64 loss against Dodge City Community College , Wednesday night at the Dodge City Civic Center . The Saints also dropped their third consecutive game, following two straight losses to finish the non-conference schedule. Seward County falls to 9-5 overall, 0-1 in the Jayhawk West Conference, while pre-season Jayhawk West No. 1 pick, Dodge City C.C. improves to 13-1 overall and 1-0 in the Jayhawk West.

Seward County was coached Wednesday night by Dale Reed and Toby Wynn, who have been assigned bench coaching duties for the Saints during the first four games of the 2007 conference schedule. Reed, who was back on the sidelines after retiring from coaching in 1996, spent 13 years as head coach of the Saints where he posted a career record of 224-168. Saints head coach Dave Brown will not be coaching during the four game period due to an institutional disciplinary decision. Reed currently is employed at SCCC as the Associate Dean of Educational Services and Wynn is the Head Women’s Basketball Coach.

In the first-half Dodge City held the lead for the majority of the period, but the Saints kept the contest close. The Conquistadors were shooting the basketball well in the first period hitting 13-of-21 shots (62 percent), while the Saints shot only 36 percent from the floor.

After halftime the Saints competed with the depleted Dodge City line-up, who was without their two regular starting guards, Julius Perkins and Angel Santiago. Perkins, who started for Dodge City , left the game at the 10:22 mark in the game due to an apparent illness. Santiago , who came into the game averaging 15 points in the non-conference schedule, was not active for the conference opener.

The Saints cut the Dodge City lead to 52-51, after a Darko Cohadarevic three-point field goal with 7:33 remaining in the game. Dodge City then answered back with two consecutive possessions that ended in Charlie Coley dunks, to increase their lead to 56-51. The Conquistador finished the game on a 22-13 run, to pick up their fourth straight win over the Saints at the Dodge City Civic Center .

Saints sophomore Theron Wilson led all players Wednesday night with 24 points. Wilson, the leading scorer and rebounder in the Region VI, also pulled down nine boards with three assists and three steals. Dodge City was led by Coley, who pitched in 22 points and 13 rebounds, along with Jarray Mathews who scored 20 points with six rebounds.

The Saints will be at home on Saturday, Jan. 6 hosting Hutchinson Community College at the Green House for a Jayhawk West Conference tip-off starting at 8 p.m.
