February 21, 2007 SAINTS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT, CLOUD WINS SIXTH STRAIGHT The Seward County Community College men’s basketball team lost on the road to Cloud County Community College 71-66, on Wednesday night at Arley Bryant Gymnasium in Concordia. Seward County had their opportunities to make a comeback in the second-half, but the Thunderbirds held on to win their sixth consecutive game behind 12 players who scored for the T-Birds in Wednesday night’s victory. The Saints remain in sixth place and fall to 15-11 overall and to 6-7 in the Jayhawk West Conference. Fifth-place Cloud County improves to 20-7 overall and to 8-5 in the Jayhawk West Conference. The Saints played lethargic early in the game and trailed by as many as 14 points (34-20) in the first-half. The T-Birds shot 45 percent in the opening period to take a 34-27 lead at halftime. BOX SCORE OVERALL SEASON STATS, CONFERENCE STATS Seward County made adjustments at halftime and were able to take the lead 48-47, with 12:14 remaining in the game. The Saints got back in the game going on an 18-8 run, being paced by Nick Burns who scored eight points in the 18 point scoring run. Seward County shot 50 percent (13-for-26) from the floor in the second-half. Cloud County then went on an 11-0 run to regain the lead 58-48, which they wouldn’t relinquish the remainder of the game. The closest the Saints came was when Burns made three free throws to cut the lead to 65-63, with 3:02 remaining in the game. Burns led the Saints with 16 points, six rebounds and three assists. It is Burns’ third straight game to score in double-figures. Michael Tyree scored 15 points and Bryson Hampton tied career-highs with 14 points and nine rebounds. Cloud County was led by Ricky Jackson (18 points and six assists) and Rudy Meo (10 points). Seward County will play their final regular season road game on Saturday, Feb. 24, at Garden City Community College . The Saints and the third-place Broncbusters (8-18, 8-5) will tip-off at 8 p.m. at the Perryman Center in Garden City.
