SAINTS POST-SEASON RUN CUT
SHORT BY BARTON IN QUARTERFINALS
The Seward County Community College men’s basketball team almost pulled off their second straight post-season come-from-behind upset on Sunday afternoon. The No. 13 seeded Saints were defeated by No. 5 seeded Barton County Community College 69-66, in the NJCAA D-I Region VI Tournament quarterfinals at Charles Koch Arena in
Wichita
. After falling behind 16-2 to start the game, the Saints rallied back to eventually take the lead in the second-half. The Saints finish their season with a 17-14 overall record and the Cougars (27-6) advance to the Region VI Tournament semifinals on Monday at 5 p.m. against Dodge City C.C.
Barton
County
jumped out to an early 11-0 lead after the opening three minutes of the contest.
Seward
County
didn’t score a point until the 15:17 mark and trailed 16-2 with 14:54 remaining the half.
Seward County got back into the game going on a 23-9 run, after the Saints defense forced several Barton County turnovers over an eight minute period to tie the score 25-25. The Saints forced 14 Cougar turnovers in the first-half and

held a 19-12 rebounding advantage going into halftime with a narrow 37-36 lead over SCCC.

Saints sophomore Michael Tyree led
Seward
County
at halftime with 19 points including three 3-pointers, which also put him into first place all-time in
Seward
County
history for single-season 3-point field goals passing Rashon Mickens (97 in 1996-97) for the all-time lead. Theron Wilson added eight points and five rebounds for the Saints at halftime.
The game stayed close in the second-half, with the Cougars posting a four point lead twice, which was the largest lead of the half. The Saints recorded four leads in the second period, with their largest lead coming at 59-57, with 6:35 remaining to play.
A big advantage for
Barton
County
was the play of reserves Antowine Lamb and Chris Jackson The duo came off the bench for the Cougars and combined to score 18 points on 6-for-6 shooting from the field.
Barton
County
’s bench outscored the Saints 21-2, as Bryson Hampton was the only Saints reserve to make it into the scoring column.
Jackson
came up huge for
Barton
County
with 14.8 seconds remaining and the Cougars up one point (67-66) and the Saints in-bounding the ball.
Jackson
stole the pass from out of bounds and was fouled on a lay-up with 11.8 seconds left to play.
Jackson
made both free throws and the Saints were unable to make a three-point shot to send the game into the extra period.
Barton
County
guard Omar Johnson hit the eventual game winning shot, after the Saints held their final lead 66-65, with 2:12 left to play.
Tyree finished with a game-high 28 points and led all players with five steals.
Wilson
finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Barton
County
had fine performances from Johnson (16 points, eight rebounds and five assists), Ivan Evans (16 points and seven rebounds) and Thiago Cordeiro (13 points, eight rebounds and three blocks).
Tyree and Wilson end their
Seward
County
careers as two of the top players to ever play for the Saints. Tyree closes his SCCC career ranked in four all-time categories. He is first in single-season 3-pointers (100), 17th in single-season scoring (553 points) and second all-time in career 3-points (153) and 14th in career scoring (843 points).
Wilson
had a season to remember breaking two all-time Top 5 statistical categories.
Wilson
now ranks third all-time in single-season free throws (199), fourth in single-season rebounding (336) and 11th in single-season scoring (601 points). In
Seward
County
all-time career stats,
Wilson
ranks fifth in free throws (275), fourth in rebounding (522) and 11th in scoring (960).
