RETURNING STARTERS
Experience in athletics tends to be what most coaches rely on for the strength of their team beginning a new season. In junior college basketball, only the returning sophomore players have experienced the previous seasons’ up’s and down’s, and can use those experiences for knowledge and learning to prepare them for their sophomore seasons. If experience is the key, then the Saints and Lady Saints basketball teams are on the right track for the 2006-2007 season. The Saints return a wealth of experience including five sophomore players with two returning starters with Theron Wilson (
Topeka
,
Kan.
) and Michael Tyree (
Somerset
,
N.J.
).
Wilson
enters the season as one of the top players in the NJCAA Region VI after a freshman season that saw him average 12 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Wilson’s high flying acrobatic takes to the rim and strong slashes to the basket will keep the Saints opponents alert to where Wilson will be on the court at all times. Tyree is a classic example of a deadly outside shooter. The 5 foot-11 inch guard is the top three-point shooter returning in the Jayhawk West Conference, after nailing 53 three-point buckets during his freshman season. Tyree’s offensive prowess was noticed early last season by the eventual Jayhawk West Co-Champion,
Dodge City
Community College
, in the opening game of the 2006 Jayhawk West Conference season. Tyree single-handedly dominated the Conquistador’s in the second-half at the Green House scoring 20 points on 4-of-8 shooting from downtown and 4-of-4 shooting from the free throw line. Tyree’s performance helped lead the Saints to a 77-71 victory, after trailing by 15 points with only eight minutes left in the second-half.
