November 1, 2006 SAINTS BASKETBALL & PEPSI CLASSIC BEGIN ON THURSDAY The Seward County Community College men’s basketball team will tip-off their season on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 8:00 p.m. against Sterling College J.V. at the Green House. The Saints host the Pepsi Classic also on Friday night against North Lake College and will finish the classic on Saturday night against Odessa College . All of the Saints home games this season will begin at 8:00 p.m. Free tickets for the Pepsi Classic will be available all week in Liberal at the north and south Pizza Hut’s, First National Bank and Applebee’s. Dave Brown The Saints first opponent in the Pepsi Classic is Sterling College J.V. History shows the Saints have had their way with the Warriors J.V. program. In their three previous meetings, SCCC head coach Dave Brown and the Saints have posted a 3-0 record with an average of a 37 point-margin of victory. The Saints defeated Sterling twice last season, including a 100-51 victory at the Green House in the 05-06 Pepsi Classic. Seward County will welcome the defending NJCAA D-III champion North Lake College to the Green House for their Friday night match-up. North Lake captured the Division III title in 2005-2006, with a 22-14 overall record. The Blazers who enter the season ranked pre-season No. 14, compete against Division I junior colleges during most of the non-conference schedule before playing their regular conference schedule. North Lake returns a veteran team that includes 10 sophomores. In addition, the Blazers will showcase three players who are 6-foot-9-inches or taller. On Saturday night, the Saints will face a talented Odessa Wranglers team that is coming off a 19-12 overall record in 2005-2006, where they qualified for the Regional Tournament. Odessa sophomore Sean Jackson is considered as a player to watch in junior college basketball this season. Jackson averaged 10.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game during his freshman season. The Wranglers also return 5-foot-11-inch guard Dewayne Hall, who averaged 8.7 points per game and scored a team-high 41 three-point baskets last season. The last two seasons the Saints have recorded a 6-0 record at the Pepsi Classic, defeating their opponents by an average of 32 points per game.
