The Seward County Community College men’s basketball team defeated
North
Lake
College
88-52, in the second day of the Pepsi Classic at the Green House in Liberal. The Saints knocked off the defending NJCAA Division III champs by shooting .500 from the field (35-for-70) and by forcing
North
Lake
into 16 turnovers. Saints sophomore Theron Wilson scored a career-high 25 points, including 20 points in the first-half. Wilson and the Saints played strong perimeter defense holding
North
Lake
to 3-of-20 from three-point range. The Saints improve to 2-0 overall this season, improving their non-conference winning streak to 22 games, a streak that spans over the past three seasons.
The Saints gradually took control of the game in the first-half. Seward never trailed in the opening period and took a commanding 48-27 lead going into intermission.
The highlights in the first-half revolved around
Wilson
. The 6-foot-5-inch sophomore from
Topeka
,
Kan.
, shot 7-for-14 from the field, 2-for-4 from three-point range and was 4-for-5 from the free-throw line while putting up 20 points in the opening stanza.
Wilson
finished the game leading the Saints in scoring (25 points), blocks (3), steals (2) and was tied with Bryson Hampton for the team-lead in rebounds (6).
Darko Cohadarevic was the second leading scorer for the Saints with 14 points. Cohadarevic shot 6-of-8 from the field and recorded five rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Hampton, Martrelle Patterson and Ervin Williams all scored eight points for
Seward
County
.
North
Lake
was led by Derick Sumpter (11 points) and Brandon Brooks (10 points) who were the only Blazers to score in double-figures.
In two games this season, the Saints are shooting .500 from the field and are averaging 50.5 total rebounds with 94.5 points per game.
The Saints will finish competition in the Pepsi Classic on Saturday night against
Odessa
College
at 8:00 p.m. at the Green House.
Odessa
won their second game in the Pepsi Classic on Friday night defeating Sterling College J.V. 114-50. Leading the way for
Odessa
over
Sterling
was Patrick Perkins (18 points, five rebounds and three assists), Teddy Chambers (15 points and five rebounds) and Quintin Thornton (10 points and seven rebounds).
Odessa
shot .586 from the field and forced 36 Warrior turnovers.
