Theron Wilson
Michael Tyree
The Seward County Community College men’s basketball team entered the final night of the Pepsi Classic with a 22-game non-conference winning streak. The Odessa Wranglers snapped the Saints streak, a streak that began in the non-conference portion of the 2004-2005 season. Seward County fell 90-86 to Odessa in a high-tempo exciting contest with two extremely talented teams competing against each other in the final game of the Pepsi Classic, held in Liberal at the Green House. The Saints drop to 2-1 overall and Odessa improves their overall season record to 3-0.

Seward County was once again led by sophomore Theron Wilson. In the first-half, Wilson scored 20 points, the same amount of points he scored the previous night against North Lake College in the first-half. Wilson finished the game scoring a career-high 28 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the floor, 12-of-20 from the charity stripe and grabbing nine rebounds, with four assists and four steals. Wilson during the Saints first three games of the season is averaging 24 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.7 steals and 2.7 assists per game.

The Saints and Odessa traded leads in the first-half with Odessa carrying a 48-45 lead going into half-time. Overall, there were 16 ties and 15 lead changes with the largest lead of the game coming with the Saints ahead 75-67, after Michael Tyree hit a three-point field goal with 8:27 remaining in the second-half.

Tyree also posted a career-high scoring 25 points on 7-of-19 shooting from the field and 5-of-12 shooting from behind the three-point arc. Tyree leads the Saints this season with 12 three-point field goals. In addition, Tyree moves into 15th place all-time on the Saints career three-point field goals list, moving past Brett Sweeney who made 64 three’s from 2001-2003. Other leading scorers for the Saints were Bryson Hampton (eight points) and Martrelle Patterson (eight points).

The Saints recorded an uncharacteristic 26 turnovers, while Odessa committed 17 turnovers. The Wranglers free-throw shooting allowed the Saints to stay within reach throughout the game as Odessa shot 14-of-30 (.467) from the free-throw line.
