January 23, 2007 SAINTS ESCAPE WITH THIRD STRAIGHT ROAD WIN, KNOCK OFF BUSTERS 69-68 Nick Burns Nick Burns made the game-winning 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining to give Seward County Community College a 69-68 victory over Garden City Community College on Wednesday night at the Perryman Center in Garden City. Burns’ game-winning shot gave Seward County its first lead since the 16:10 mark in the first half (9-8). The victory marks the third-straight win for Seward County, all coming on the road, as Seward County moved into second-place in the Jayhawk West Conference with a 4-2 conference mark and a 16-4 overall record. Garden City had its three-game winning streak snapped and falls to 14-5 overall and to 3-3 in conference play. The Broncbusters led the majority of the game and by as many as 10 points (42-52), when the Busters connected on their ninth 3-pointer of the game with 12:46 left to play. Seward County was kept in the contest during the second half by sophomore post Darko Cohadarevic. The 6-foot-9 Serbian scored 14 straight points for the Saints during a seven-minute span to keep the Saints close, 62-66, with 3:49 left in regulation. BOX SCORE Garden City’s final points came with a field goal at the 2:29 mark, giving the Busters a 68-62 lead. After a Seward County timeout, Saints’ sophomore Ervin Williams made 2-of-2 from the free throw line and then came up with a steal to give the ball back to SCCC. The Saints missed their following shot, but freshman Reggie Chamberlain followed with a steal that led to a Williams’ lay-up to bring the Saints within two points, 66-68, with 1:12 remaining. Burns gave the Saints the lead with the deep 3-pointer with 30 seconds left to play. Garden City had two opportunities to win the game but a jump shot from sophomore Jordan Ragan, and a three-point field goal attempt from leading scorer Corey Claitt (18.1 ppg.) were off the mark to give the Saints the come-from-behind over the Busters. Cohadarevic led the Saints with 17 points (14 in the second half) and nine rebounds. SCCC freshman Bruno Mendes finished with 13 points (three 3-pointers), Williams collected 11 points, and sophomore Bryson Hampton sparked the Saints with 11 points in 11 minutes off the bench. Garden City shot 10-of-23 from 3-point range, and the Busters out-rebounded the Saints, 43-29, which included 21 offensive rebounds. Seward County used a 54 percent shooting effort (13-of-24) in the second half to help complete the road victory. The Busters were led by Claitt (18 points, five rebounds), Ragan (16 points, five 3-pointers) and Tyrone Flemming (seven points, seven rebounds).
