January 30, 2008 BALANCED ATTACK LEADS SEWARD IN CONVINCING WIN OVER COLBY Bryan Zollinger Seward County Community College recorded its largest conference victory of the season defeating Colby Community College, 97-59, on Wednesday night at the Green House in Liberal. The Saints have now won five straight Jayhawk West Conference games, which is their longest conference winning streak in six years (2001-2002 – six straight). Seward County dominated, out-rebounding Colby by 19, and with the Saints bench outscoring the Trojans, 45-9. Seward County (18-4, 6-2) remains tied with Cloud County Community College for second-place in the Jayhawk West, after the T-Birds knocked off previously unbeaten Hutchinson C.C. on Wednesday night in Concordia. Colby drops to 6-16 overall and to 2-6 in league competition. The Saints put the game away in the second half while outscoring Colby by 40 points (76-36) in the final 32 minutes of regulation. The Saints trailed, 28-29, with 4:35 left to play in the first half, before Seward County went into halftime on a 15-2 run. BOX SCORE Seward County held a 43-31 lead at halftime while its bench contributed 23 first-half points. Seward sophomore post Darko Cohadarevic led all players at halftime with 10 points. Darko Cohadarevic Donald Dixon It was all SCCC in the second half with the Saints leading by as many as 39 points (96-57) following a Nick Burns 3-pointer with 1:43 left in the game. Seward County made a season-high 15 three-pointers, and they shot an impressive 55 percent (18-of-33) from the field in the second half. The Saints’ bench combined to score 45 points in the game while the Saints’ starters tallied 52 points. Leading the way off the Saints’ bench was Donald Dixon (14 points, 4-of-5 three-pointers) and Bryson Hampton (12 points, seven rebounds). Dixon has averaged 17 points and is 7-of-9 from 3-point range the past two games. Cohadarevic, the team’s leading scorer (15.0 ppg.) and rebounder (8.5 rpg.), led SCCC with 17 points and eight rebounds. Freshman point guard Reggie Chamberlain collected 14 points (4-of-8 three-pointers) with three assists. Colby, who played without two of its top leading scorers (Mike Boyd, 19.3 ppg and Koance Davis, 16.4 ppg.) was led by Erick Peguero (19 points), Mikey Doll (12 points, five assists) and Everson Lacerda (11 points, six rebounds). The loss Wednesday night extends the Trojans conference losing streak to six games. Seward County will travel to Dodge City on Saturday, Feb. 2, to take on the Conquistadors (10-10, 2-5) for an 8 p.m. tip-off at the Dodge City Civic Center. RECORD BOOKS NOTES: Bryan Zollinger entered the night as the winningest first-year head coach in Saints’ history. The previous record was 16 wins set by former Seward County head coach Dale Reed, who tallied 16 wins during his rookie campaign 25 years ago (1983-1984).
