Seward County punched its ticket to the eight-team Region VI Tournament in Wichita with a lopsided 101-59 victory over tournament No. 15 seed Labette Community College on Wednesday night at the Green House. The Saints notched their fourth 100-plus scoring game, and held LCC to below 60 points as SCCC continues to prove they are one of the top offensive and defensive teams in the Region VI. Seward County has now won 12 of its last 13 games overall. Standing between the Saints and a semifinal appearance is a familiar foe, Garden City C.C., who the Saints have already defeated three times this season.
After collecting three wins over GCCC this season, the Saints lead the overall series against the Broncbusters, 11-7, since 2000-2001. Early in the season SCCC defeated Garden City in a rare non-conference meeting 77-63 in Liberal, then the Saints escaped from the Perryman Center in Garden City with a one-point (69-68) victory on a Nick Burns 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining. Then the Saints finished the regular season sweep with a 60-52 win at the Green House on Feb. 23. The last time the Saints and Busters met in the post-season was also in the Region VI quarterfinals in 2002, when the Saints advanced with a 70-52 victory.
Garden City has won three straight games since its loss at the Green House, and the Busters were the only lower seeded team in the Region VI Tournament that won on the road in the First Round of tournament play. Garden City has several impressive victories on its resume’ this season including home wins against Cloud County C.C. (89-76) and Hutchinson C.C. (78-61) and a road victory at Barton County C.C. (82-76). The top three players for the Busters this season has been Corey Claitt (17.4 ppg.), Jordan Ragan (10.9 ppg.) and Tyrone Flemming (9.9 ppg., 7.3 rpg.).
