STEVENS COLLECTS TWO WINS, LADY SAINTS GO 1-2 IN OKLAHOMA CITY
The Seward County Community College women’s tennis team traveled to Oklahoma City last weekend to participate in the Seminole State Tennis Festival where they faced two nationally-ranked opponents on Friday and Saturday. Seward County finished 1-3 overall, with a 9-0 dual victory over Eastfield Community College, a 0-9 loss against No. 4 Collin County Community College, and a 1-8 loss verses No. 5 North Central Texas College. Freshman Valerie Stevens was the top performer for the Lady Saints on the weekend posting a 2-1 record at No. 4 singles. Seward County is now 40-39 overall in total matches played this season.
Every Lady Saint singles player earned a victory over Eastfield in their first dual on Friday, with Stevens, Erica Herrera and Alyssa Larson all winning 6-0, 6-0. Herrera and Larson’s victories gave them each six-singles wins on the season.
The Lady Saints following duals would pit them against two of the top teams in the nation.
Collin County, who finished last season in sixth-place at the NJCAA Tournament, swept SCCC in singles and doubles competition. Larson lost a battle in No. 6 singles, 7-6 (7-2), 0-6, 2-10, which was the only match that went past two sets.
Stevens earned the lone victory for the Lady Saints against North Central Texas, who finished fifth at the NJCAA Tournament a year ago. Stevens knocked off Jo’Vonna Gaines in No. 4 singles, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
The Lady Saints will play their final dual of the season on a neutral court against Johnson County Community College on Thursday, April 10, at 1:30 p.m. in Wichita.
