Seward
County
Community College
women’s tennis team competed at the Wichita Collegiate Tennis Tournament last weekend. The Lady Saints went a combined 9-9 in single-s and doubles competition. Freshman Valerie Stephens finished as a singles runner-up with a 3-1 overall record and sophomore Erica Herrera also tallied a 3-1 mark. The Wichita Collegiate Tournament is designed for junior college and four-year tennis programs to compete against each other in every flight category.

) cruised to the championship match with straight set victories against
Kansas
Newman
University
(6-1, 6-3),
Emporia
State
University
(6-2, 6-2) and
Nebraska
Kearney
University
(6-2, 7-5). In the finals, Stephens was defeated by
Emporia
State
University
4-6 and 0-6.
Herrera, a returning player for the Lady Saints who finished her freshman season in the Round of 16 at the NJCAA National Tournament, defeated quality opponents last weekend with wins against Kansas Newman University (6-1, 6-3), Baker University (6-1, 6-2) and a Creighton University (7-5, 1-6, 10-8). She was defeated by another Creighton player in her final match last weekend (6-7, 0-6).
Other SCCC players who earned match victories were Fabiola Wisnesky (1-2) and Alyssa Larson (1-1), while Sanela Dejanovic (0-2) was defeated against both four-year university opponents.
In doubles competition, Wisnesky and Herrera defeated
Nebraska
Wesleyan
University
(9-8) for the Lady Saints’ lone doubles victory.
The
Seward
County
women’s tennis team will be competing this weekend at the Bethany College Tournament in
Lindsborg
,
Kan.
Match times have not yet been assigned for Friday and Saturday competition.
