After sweeping their competition on Friday at the SCCC Kick-Off Classic, Seward County Community College lost both matches on Saturday to Frank Phillips College (14-30, 29-31 and 31-33) and Garden City Community College (23-30, 28-30, 30-25 and 25-30) at the Green House in Liberal. Frank Phillips won the classic with a 4-0 mark, Garden City finished second (3-1), the Lady Saints took third-place (2-2), New Mexico Military came in fourth (1-3) and Cisco went winless in classic competition (0-4). Seward County falls to 2-2 overall this season.

The Lady Plainsmen jumped out early on Seward County with a commanding 16 point victory in game-one. Seward County came back and played strong in games two and three, while each team handed the lead back and forth several times. It was Frank Phillips who was able to win both games to stay unbeaten at the Kick-Off Classic.

Seward County ’s offense hit just .194 (35 kills, 14 errors and 108 attempts) and was inconsistent from the service line with six serving errors.

Leading the way on offense was freshman outside hitter Dan Yang, who tallied a team-high 16 kills and also collected six digs, two aces and one block. Freshman middle hitter Mallori Proffitt led the Lady Saints with a .300 hitting percentage, and freshman outside hitter Jelena Simic led the team in digs (15) and also posted seven kills.

In the fourth and final match of the Kick-Off Classic, Seward County matched up with Jayhawk Conference rival Garden City C.C. From the start it was Garden City who over-matched the Lady Saints as the Lady Broncbusters recorded a .340 hitting percentage during the match.

GCCC took games one and two before Seward County recorded a game-three 30-25 victory. Garden City claimed the match victory with a .342 game-four hitting effort, compared to SCCC who hit just .162 in the fourth game.

Neither team excelled from the service line with a combined 22 service errors, but Garden City dominated the net with eight total team blocks. The Lady Saints received blocks from only two players as they totaled 2.5 blocks.

Yang continued her assault on the Lady Saints’ opponents with a career and match-high 29 kills (.383 %). After four matches in a Lady Saints’ uniform, Yang has collected 80 kills (5.71 kills per game), a .352 hitting percentage, 19 service aces, 26 digs and four blocks.

Also helping pace the Lady Saints’ offense is Simic, who after four matches has posted 52 kills, 10 aces, 34 digs and a team-leading .402 hitting percentage. Against GCCC, Simic had 17 kills (.371 %), four aces and six digs.

Sophomore Alex Droogsma led the team with 28 assists and sophomore Katy Troutman posted a team-high 20 digs.

Seward County will open their Jayhawk West Conference schedule on Wednesday, Aug 29 hosting Butler Community College at 6:30 p.m. at the Green House.
