volleyball team is finding out why
Western
Nebraska
Community College
is the No. 1 ranked team in the nation.
Western Nebraska
(27-1) defeated the Lady Saints at the Northeastern Colorado Tournament last weekend, snapping a three match winning streak. Then last night, Seward County fell to Western Nebraska 20-30, 17-30, 20-30, at the Wyo-Braska Shootout, snapping their nine match winning streak that started after their previous loss to the Lady Cougars.

before falling to
Western Nebraska
. Seward County is now 17-5 overall this season.
The No. 14 ranked Lady Saints collected nine straight victories, their longest winning streak in four seasons, before facing Western Nebraska on Friday night on WNCC’s home court in
Scottsbluff
,
Neb.
Against
Western Nebraska
, SCCC hit .333 in the first game, but were then held to a .173 hitting percentage (13 kills, 4 errors, 52 attempts) in the final two games. The Lady Cougar defense was tough allowing only one SCCC service ace and 24 kills.

The highlight for
Seward
County
against
Western Nebraska
was sophomore Katy Troutman recording 12 digs to break the SCCC all-time career mark for digs with 1,048. Troutman, who last season broke the single-season digs record (777), surpassed Gabi Carbone’s career record of 1,041 digs (1998-1999). Carbone was a 1999 NJCAA & AVCA First Team All-American, and is currently an assistant volleyball coach at the
University
of
Houston
.
In the Lady Saints second match on Friday against Northwestern Wyoming College (30-16, 30-22, 30-27) they recorded 9.5 team blocks and were led by freshman outside hitter Jelena Simic, who collected 15 kills, 12 digs and hit .414 for the match. Freshman Mallori Proffitt chipped in seven kills and a team-high six blocks. Dan Yang led all players with 19 kills.
Seward
County
dominated Miles C.C. 30-19, 30-21, 30-16 needing just an hour and 15 minutes to win their ninth straight match. Simic posted her third consecutive double-double with a team-high 16 kills and 17 digs. Sophomore Alex Droogsma had 19 assists and three service aces, while Heather Zerr also chipped in three aces.
The Lady Saints will finish competition on Saturday at the Wyo-Braska Shootout with a 1 p.m. match against
