SEWARD COUNTY CRUISES PAST GARDEN CITY IN THREE GAMES

Revenge was sweet for the
Seward
County
Community College
volleyball team on Wednesday night as they defeated Garden City Community College 30-23, 30-25, 30-18 in a Jayhawk West/NJCAA D-I Region VI match at the Green House in Liberal. After dropping a match earlier in the season at home to GCCC, the No. 14 nationally-ranked Lady Saints didn’t let the Lady Broncbusters escape with a victory this time with a dominating win.
Seward
County
stays atop the Jayhawk West standings with a perfect 5-0 conference mark. SCCC improves to 19-5 overall this season and Garden City falls to 16-9 overall and to 2-2 in the Jayhawk West.
The opening game belonged to the Lady Saints who jumped out early and never looked back. SCCC hit .405 (19 kills, 4 errors, 37 attempts) in the first game.
Garden City was able to hold a brief lead in the second game, but outside hitter Jelena Simic provided all the offensive firepower the Lady Saints would need. Simic finished with a .467 hitting percentage for the match and was second on the team with 17 kills.
Freshman outside hitter Dan Yang led all players with 18 kills. She is now averaging a team-high 5.77 kills per game.
Seward
County
dominated the third and final game defeating Garden City 30-18. It was the fourth conference match this season that
Seward
County
did not allow their opponent to reach 20 points in the final game of the match.
Sophomore Alex Droogsma led the Lady Saints with 20 assists and sophomore Katy Troutman equaled a season-high 23 digs.
The Lady Saints will travel this weekend to the
Midland
College
in
Midland
,
Texas
, where they will compete in the two-day tournament.
Seward
County
will open play on Friday, Sept. 28 against New Mexico Military Institute at 8 a.m. They will also play
Western
Texas
College
(2 p.m.) and host school
Midland
College
(6 p.m.) on Friday. Single-elimination bracket competition will begin on Saturday with opponents and match times being announced after play concludes on Friday evening.
