LADY SAINTS SWEPT ON OPENING DAY OF INVITATIONAL
The
Seward
County
Community College
volleyball team struggled during the opening day of the SCCC Invitational with two straight losses against No. 17 Northeastern Colorado Junior College (29-31, 28-30) and
Arizona
Western
College
(17-30, 25-30). The No. 15 nationally-ranked Lady Saints played a competitive match against the Plainswomen from NJC, but were not able to take either game in their opening match on Friday. Arizona Western collected their second win of the Invitational in the late match Friday night, with a convincing victory over the Lady Saints at the Green House in Liberal.
Seward
County
has lost four of their last five matches, with three against nationally-ranked opponents.
Northeastern Colorado
had revenge on their mind, after last month, it was SCCC who traveled to the N.E. Colorado Tournament where they pulled off an upset over the then-No. 10 ranked Plainswomen in
Sterling
,
Colo.
Northeastern
Colorado
improved their overall season record to 32-9 with the two game sweep over SCCC.
In the final match on Friday,
Seward
County
battled against Arizona Western and held their final lead in the first game with a 14-13 edge. That is when AWC went on a 13-2 run, which included eight kills and three blocks. The Lady Matadors controlled the net with five team blocks during the first game.

was kept in the first game by standout freshman Dan Yang who posted six kills in the opening frame. Yang provided crucial offense for
Seward
County
with her first four kills giving

either the lead or tying the score.

The second game stayed close early, with neither team gaining more than a two point lead.
Seward
County
recorded an 11-10 lead before the Lady Matadors added 10 kills and three blocks to cruise to a five point victory.
Arizona Western posted two wins on Friday also defeating
Midland
College
30-20, 19-30, 15-13 on Friday morning. Arizona Western improved their overall record to 19-5, while
Seward
County
drops to 25-9 overall this season.
The SCCC Invitational will continue pool-play on Saturday morning during the first four matches. After each team has completed three matches for the weekend, the two pool-play brackets will match top seeds into the championship match at 6:30 p.m., the two second place teams will face each other in the 3rd place match at 5 p.m., the two three seeds will battle for 5th place at 3:30 p.m. and the last place pool-play team will face-off at 2 p.m. for 7th place.
