DAN YANG BREAKS KILLS RECORD, LADY SAINTS DROP TWO MATCHES

Community College
lost its final two matches of the SCCC Invitational volleyball tournament on Saturday at the Green House in Liberal. The No. 15 ranked Lady Saints were defeated by Midland College 24-30 and 27-30 in their final pool-play match, and then were knocked off by No. 14 Hutchinson Community College 26-30, 30-28, 10-15 in the 7th place match of the tournament.

’s struggles continued on Saturday, and have now lost six of their last seven matches overall.
Seward
County
drops to 25-11 this season and remains 6-1 in Jayhawk West Conference play.
Freshman Dan Yang was the bright spot for
Seward
County
on Saturday breaking the all-time SCCC single-season record for kills. Yang, who collected a total of 33 kills on Saturday, now has 690 total kills this season passing Janete Ferreira (667 kills) who broke the school-record last season.
The saying ‘third time’s the charm’ was accurate on Saturday as
Midland
picked up a victory against Seward. The Lady Saints claimed two wins against the Lady Chaps in the Midland Tournament late last month.

The Lady Chaps used a stellar defensive output and a consistent offensive attack to cruise past
Seward
County
on Saturday.
Midland
put SCCC in an early hole early with a 9-1 advantage, and never let
Seward
County
closer than five points the rest of the first game.
Midland
dominated at the net with eight blocks, while Yang’s 11 kills and freshman Mallori Proffitt’s three kills led the way for SCCC.
Seward
County
attempted to battle back and force a third game, but the Lady Saints’ 10 errors were too much to overcome as
Midland
won the second game and the match.
The loss seeded the Lady Saints in fourth-place in Pool A and into the 7th place match against Hutchinson C.C. who also went 0-3 in Pool B competition.
The two conference foes battled with many lead changes and ties throughout the match. The Lady Saints, who have not beaten Hutchinson since the 2003 season, led by as many as five points in the first game.
After Yang recorded a kill and gave
Seward
County
their largest lead (12-7),
Hutchinson
was forced to take a timeout.
Hutchinson
then immediately collected a block and
Seward
County
committed five errors to tie the score at 12. Hutch went on a 13-2 run and finished game-one with a 30-26 win. Proffitt led SCCC with five kills in the opening game.
The second game was a back and forth battle with a total of 17 ties and 17 lead changes. Neither team led by more than two points until
Seward
County
freshman Heather Zerr collected an ace to give the Lady Saints a 24-21 lead. Hutch didn’t go down easy as they tied the score 27-27, following a Lady Saints hitting error and Lady Blue Dragon block.
The game ended with two kills from Yang and one kill from Jenna Ginest, as
Seward
County
evened the match at 1-1. Yang collected 11 kills in the second game to help Seward County force a deciding game-three.
In the third game
Seward
County
trailed 2-5, but then tied the score after two kills from Yang and one kill from Alex Droogsma.
Hutchinson
looked to pull away with an 11-7 lead, but again SCCC posted back-to-back kills from Jelena Simic and Alex Droogsma to force
Hutchinson
into a timeout. The Lady Blue Dragons responded with four kills and one block to collect the victory over the Lady Saints.
Seward
County
will be off until next weekend when they travel to the Missouri State Tournament in West Plains, Mo. The Lady Saints will open competition on Friday, Oct. 19 against
State
Fair
College
at 12 p.m. and against No. 18 Missouri State at 6 p.m. Then Saturday, Oct. 20
Seward
County
will play Wallace State C.C. at 10 a.m. and will finish tourney play at 2 p.m. against Lake Land College.
