ALMOST PULLS OFF HUGE UPSET AT NO. 7 BARTON COUNTY

The scenario was set prior to the first serve, if
Barton
County
won it would be their first Jayhawk West Conference crown since 2003. If the Seward County Lady Saints volleyball team could pull off the upset, they would earn a share of the conference title. Two hours later, the Lady Saints were looking at what would have been their biggest victory of the season, just as the No. 7 Lady Cougars came roaring back, down 14-12 in the fifth game, to score four straight points to win the match on their home court at the
Barton
County
Gym.
Seward
County
secured third-place in the Jayhawk West and NJCAA D-I Region VI despite the 30-28, 17-30, 15-30, 30-15, 14-16, loss last night on the road in
Great Bend
. The Lady Saints finish the regular season 28-13 overall, 6-2 in the Jayhawk West and 3-2 in the NJCAA D-I Region VI.

early that they were looking to pull off the big upset with a 19-11 lead in the first game. The Lady Saints held a 24-16 advantage before Barton rallied late falling just short 30-28, as
Seward
County
finished with the game-one victory. The Lady Saints prevailed in the first game hitting an impressive .414 (14 kills, 2 errors, 29 attempts).
Barton
County
(34-7, 8-0) then showed why they were the No. 7 ranked team in the nation, dominating the match in games two and three with 30-17 and 30-15 wins. The Lady Saints recorded just nine kills with 10 errors in the second and third games.

The momentum had clearly shifted to the Lady Cougars playing in front of a packed Barton County Gym, just before the Lady Saints crushed

in game-four, 30-15. SCCC tallied 18 kills, five blocks and two aces in the fourth game with a .500 hitting percentage.
In game-five,
Seward
County
trailed 4-7 early, but then scored six straight points taking a 10-7 lead. The Lady Cougars posted three straight points to tie the score at 7-7.

took the lead with three kills from Alex Droogsma and Dan Yang, and later Yang recorded a kill that gave
Seward
County
the serve with match point at 14-12. The Lady Cougars closed out the match scoring four straight points to win the Jayhawk West Conference with a 16-14 game-five victory.
Yang recorded a team-high 17 kills with three aces and two blocks. Freshman Jelena Simic chipped in her 20th double/double of the season with 14 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Alex Droogsma led the team with 27 assists and sophomore libero Katy Troutman collected a team-best 17 digs.

will enter the NJCAA D-I Region VI Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will host No. 6 seed

(9-22, 1-7) on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the Green House. The winner of the Region VI Tournament Play-In-Match will advance to play No. 2 seed Hutchinson Community College (23-15, 7-1) on Sunday, Nov. 4 at the Hutchinson Sports Arena in the Region VI Tournament.
