SAINTS SEASON ENDS WITH OT LOSS TO COWLEY
The date was destiny. After seeing each other play but not facing each other in the opening weekend of the 2008-2009 basketball season, the Seward County Saints and Cowley Tigers brought in two of the conference’s most athletic and exciting teams to the Region VI Quarterfinal game Friday night at Koch Arena in Wichita. Seward struggled shooting the ball in the first half and found themselves in a 29-26 hole, down by three after shooting just 7 of 29 in the first 20 minutes. The Saints again faltered from the field in the second half, especially from beyond the three-point line where they finished just 3 of 20 on the night, but were able to stay in the game thanks to 17 of 25 free-throw attempts falling and actually held the lead with just over 20 seconds remaining in the game at 63-60 after overcoming a 10 point second half deficit. SAINTS STUMBLE IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE
Saturday night at the Power Plant, Seward County had a chance to move into a second place tie in the Jayhawk West with Butler, if they were able to knock off the Grizzlies on their home court. The Saints were arguably the hottest team in the Jayhawk Conference going into Saturday nights affair, but their fire was quickly doused by a Butler team that wanted second place all to themselves. Seward County’s offense was dismal against the West’s top defense in the first half as they were able to connect on just 7 field goals and 1 of 9 three-point attempts, falling into a 15 point deficit at the half.

SAINTS WRAP UP HOME PLAYOFF GAME WITH WIN
TO PLAY FOR SHARE OF 2ND PLACE SATURDAY
With a home playoff game on the line, the Seward County Saints took the court Wednesday night with conference rival Garden City, a team who knocked them off earlier season in the Perryman Center. Seward County jumped out to an early 9-2 lead, holding the Garden offense scoreless for a four minute stretch after a basket on their opening possession. However, like Saints fans saw in the first matchup between the two teams, Seward was unable to stretch their lead midway through the first half and the ‘Busters tied the game with just under seven minutes to go in the half. Seward took a five point lead with a couple of quick buckets but Garden roared back to close the first half and took a 32-31 lead into the locker room.
