SEWARD COUNTY ANNOUNCES 2008 SIGNING CLASS
Bert Luallen
Alana Rowland
Seward County Community College volleyball coach Bert Luallen has announced the signing of six incoming student-athletes for the 2008-2009 school year. The six high school seniors that inked official NJCAA National Letters of Intent with the Lady Saints volleyball program are Heather Carter (Mesquite, Texas), Lindsey Miller (Dumas, Texas), LaKendra Sanders (Lewisville, Texas), Amanda Savage (Wichita, Kan.), Taryn Westerman (Liberal, Kan.) and Adriann D’Amico (Hometown, State). Seward County finished the 2007 season with a 30-15 overall record, marking the 10th most wins in single-season SCCC history. The Lady Saints’ program will also return four players from last year’s team.

Although Luallen and assistant coach Alana Rowland will still be looking to sign 1-2 more players for the fall, Luallen is optimistic with the players that have made commitments to SCCC.

“We have added some size to the roster and some depth, especially at the middle hitter and outside hitter positions,” Luallen said. “We feel like, especially offensively, that our front row will be stronger and deeper. We are still looking to sign one or two more players to this recruiting class. But I think all of these players that we have signed will come in and help this program out a lot.”

Heather Carter (John Horn H.S., Mesquite, Texas) 6-foot-1 – MH/RS
Carter was named Honorable Mention All-District during the past two seasons, and she was the Mesquite Elite club team Most Valuable Player. During her senior season, Carter played in 69 games, tallied 63 kills, 53 solo blocks (25 block assists) and 28 digs.

Coach Luallen on Carter: “Heather will provide us a lot more versatility along with her size. She can play middle, she can play either right-side or outside, and I think that will help us with moving people around to have more versatility in the offense.”

Lindsey Miller (Dumas H.S., Dumas, Texas) 5-foot-10 – OH
During Miller’s senior season, she was named First Team Amarillo Globe-News Super Team and All-State. She recorded 483 digs, 394 kills, 89 blocks and set a school-record with a .330 serving accuracy. Miller was named First Team All-District and she posted a .430 hitting percentage.

Coach Luallen on Miller: “Lindsey is very athletic, she jumps very well, passes very well, just a great defensive player. She has a good personality. I think she will be a great fit into the program.”

LaKendra Sanders (Lewisville H.S., Lewisville, Texas) 6-foot-1 – MH
In 2007, Sanders led her high school with a .356 hitting percentage and 67 solo blocks. Sanders was a two-time All-District selection. Also during her senior season, Sanders posted 259 kills, 82 total blocks while playing in 105 total games. In addition, Sanders was named to several academic honor roll lists.

Coach Luallen on Sanders: “LeKendra is an exceptional athlete. The first time I saw her that was the first thing I noticed most about her was her athleticism, and her ability to jump. I think she has a huge up-side on her potential to being a better player after she gets to this level and can really focus on volleyball. I think she is a kid who could potentially be a dominating player in the middle.”

Amanda Savage (Wichita Southeast H.S., Wichita, Kan.) 5-foot-7 – L/DS
Savage played a variety of positions during high school, which led her to being named Honorable Mention All-Passer (2005-2007) and Second Team All-Outside Hitter. She was among conference leaders with 217 digs as a senior. She also recorded 84 kills, 19 assists and 34 aces during 2007. In addition, Savage was a four-time academic honor roll member.

Coach Luallen on Savage: “Amanda is a great kid. She has a lot of quickness, she reads very well on defense with the opposing hitters. She can hit outside, but at this level I think she will really help us out on the defensive end.”

Taryn Westerman (Liberal H.S., Liberal, Kan.) 5-foot-11 – S/RS
Westerman is a local product from Liberal High School. She received several honors as a senior including Honorable Mention Hutchinson News Class 5/6A All-State and Western Athletic Conference All-League. As a senior, Westerman tallied 280 kills, 3.64 kills per game and a .436 hitting percentage. She was a constant contributor at the net pacing the Lady Redskins with 343 assists and collecting 102 total blocks. In her final two seasons at LHS, Westerman collected 33 service aces. In 2006, Westerman posted 207 kills with a .577 hitting percentage. She also added 95 solo blocks and 24 assisted blocks. In addition, Westerman was named the Most Outstanding Player at LHS, and she was named LHS Tournament Most Valuable Player.

Coach Luallen on Westerman: “Taryn give us a lot of versatility with her abilities. I have been around here a lot and she is just a great kid with a great attitude. She has wanted to be a Saint for a long time. She really has a lot of desire. She provides us a lot of versatility and ability over on the right side and middle. She wants to work towards being a setter, so we are going to work with her in that area. With her size that would be a tremendous plus for us to have someone with her size and blocking ability on the right side.

Adriann D’Amico (Clearwater H.S., Piedmont, Mo.) 5-foot-6 – DS/L/S
D’Amico was a two-time All-Conference selection during her junior and senior seasons at Clearwater High School. She was tabbed the Conference Player of the Year in 2006, and she was a two-time All-District and All-Tournament Team selection. She was named team captain during her final two seasons. In addition, Adriann’s father, Paul, was the Saints assistant baseball coach from 1986-1991.

Coach Luallen on D’Amico: “Adriann is an energetic, athletic player who I believe will be a great contributor to our program. She is a very good passer and has a great understanding of the game. The fact that she can play multiple positions gives us additional depth. Her upbeat, positive personality will also be a great addition to the team.”
